Hawking trolling the universe

I’ll say right up front I don’t expect this to make too much sense. It’s only a few thoughts from….well, somewhere.

All week I was thinking of something I read in a talk Stephen Hawking gave. So the subject was the need to explore space because we can probably only survive another thousand years on earth. Not the thing that stood out, but this was his basic stance:

“We must continue to go into space for humanity,” Hawking said. “We won’t survive another 1,000 years without escaping our fragile planet.”

Then came what stuck in my craw, or wherever. A week later it is still stuck.

If you understand how the universe operates, you control it in a way.

Okay, no one likes to disagree with Hawking. Nobody likes to embarrass themselves. But come on…really, “we can control it”? I must have missed the theory that explains why X is Z or something.

I don’t know which part of his statement bothers me more. The first claims if we know how it operates, assuming we can, and the second is control it “in a way”. What way was he referring to? If we can understand it, would not mean we’ll make the right decisions. Should that be our objective, to control it?

There are so many variables there that I should just leave it alone. His statement stands for itself. I had lots of fun thinking it over for a week. It doesn’t sound any better now.

‘To understand the universe at the deepest level, we have to understand why is there something rather than nothing,’ Hawking said.

How many years have we been busy understanding how the earth operates and can we control that yet? As Dr Phil says…”and how’s that working out for you?”

And they like to call us conspiracy theorists.

Just a few years ago he declared philosophy dead because it has not kept up with modern science, particularly physics. So moving right along, aren’t we?

Once you work with system simulation and get an understanding of muti-variate analysis, you come to broaching the idea that you can only ever do a crude representation of all of the different feedback levels, all responding to local stimili and control. Run a thousand different permutations all branching to an additional thousand levels of choices and the idea of “controlling” things becomes an absurdity. The best we can do is a crude understanding of what has been going on retrospectively..
Which is why central command control never works. Example:biodome. The sealed earthship where we attempted to model the compexity of the earth in a sealed mega-greenhouse. Nearly killed the earthstronauts.

    Nah….
“Will travel to space… for food.” — That’s better.

Just working on some signage for my trip to space.

    Bull,

Good article. I’ve watched that show several times and listened to that guy. There is no way we can control the universe for bloody sake. We can’t even control what goes on down here on earth. Of course, AlBore would object, but when has he stopped a tornado, a flood, etc.

Only God controls the universe. Bunch of bullshit this guy spews sometimes and I just have to laugh.

Pepp, thanks. I’m still not sure what it is.

I fully agree with that. As smart as he is, these statmenets look like flamethrowers.. Maybe the expectations don’t match? I would think they are designed for a reaction. Then no one ever gives him one in interviews etc. They just write it down and report it, la-ti-da. Of course, maybe its my reaction? 🙂 When you try to play God you should expect some flak.

Hey, they almost sound like some candidates statments do in a heated election. Remember the Art Linkletter, “kids say the darndest things”. Well smart people can say the dangdest things sometimes.

I still say we can disagree with this guy. After all who is he? Can he have all the answers? I doubt it. If he’s brilliant that still does not mean he’s right about anything for that matter.

Pepp, I sure do disagree with much of those comments there. His purpose I guess was a tour and push for medical breakthroughs. I get it. But alot of evil was born out of need to control. Not to understand the nature of man is quite naive and dumb if you ask me.

            Bull,

The control issue is something that everyone has to fight inwardly as it is an extremely unhealthy thing to do or want to do. We have no control over anyone or anything other than ourselves.

I agree completely, it is naive and dumb to not understand man’s nature. We’ve seen it too many times before and we know what it wrought.

Bull, damn good article. Buuuuut, I’m going to have to ponder on this one a bit. Disagreeing with Hawking is WAY above my pay grade! I’ll get back to you after I have a seance and chat with Einstein!!!

Dave, haha, I sure bit off more than I could digest. LOL That, Dave, probably keeps many people from disagreeing with him. The problem may not be that philosopphy is dead but that he simply stopped listening. Hey, check those contacts, like to hear what they think. Like, “he said what???” 🙂

Dave, I should tell you the funniest part. I read the article with his statements after finishing the first 2 chapters of Ecclesiastes. It just blew my mind. Had to be there I guess…

Why CAN’T one disagree with Hawking?? Because he’s severely handicapped? Because liberals tell us we can’t ? I would never say we CANNOT control anything, given time, and the F-R-E-E-D-O-M from governmental, or other factors, to let the truly GREAT minds work on these issues, but until that time comes, NO MAN or woman, for that matter, should never be viewed as “too intelligent to disagree” with.

Clyde, great point as always, I’d like to know. He he , they’ll have all they can handle just controlling all of us — control freaks that they are. Interesting scenario when they’re beyond disagreement.
