Satire On Self

This is a day, not unlike others, where I sought to sit down and write some inane nonsense in the hopes that some misguided soul would come along to read it, hopefully calling it imparted intelligence. A place where fiction influences reality and vice versa.

After a while one can seem to run out of zany ideas that you just have to settle for reality. Then, in a twist like a Rod Sterling plot, you realize the truth has been much more crazy than any ideas you racked your brain to dream up. Truth is the bomb. That is an uh-ha moment like no other. I have had exactly those reoccurring thoughts almost every day now for months. What does it portend for our future, for my future in particular?

For posterity’s sake, we can only hope there are some lessons to be learned from this sorted process. But ironically this reality, crazy at it is, seems to be void of lessons learned from past history or prior revelations. This presents a paradox.

So are the enterprising scriptwriters for Hollywood and film also seeing the same writing on the wall that leaves this writer feeling like a dinosaur? Here is a cultural exercise to try for a test: if a thought bubble were hovering over this day, what would it say? Dare you think further, and what image would be under it?

Here is just one example from a day in which reality appears to go feral. The truth came out putting a name and face to an anonymously written NYT column in 2018, which stood media and politicos at attention. The piece: “I Am Part of the Resistance Inside the Trump Administration.” Miles Taylor turned out to be its writer, who was a staffer at Homeland Security. He left there and now has joined the CNN network of aggrieved and disgruntled government employees. He should fit right in.

Of course the kicker in the anonymity story was wondering who this insider was, or how close he really was to the president? The caustic cloud of speculation loomed over the administration for months. What did he know about daily decision-making that gave him such rich perspective on the administration? Or maybe not. And just like that, reality turned out to be crazier than the fiction it tries to emulate. But now it is too late because we have taken the bait and ran with it, as far and long as it could take us.

Still, it caused no less than 30 administration officials to deny authorship, something that apparently did not bother the astute conscience of the anonymous writer. Even Barack Obama suggested he was acting undemocratic. From a president who suffered no breaches in his administration, even while conducting a coup to undermine an incoming president.

The sheer beauty was that this person could have been any one of possibly top-tier members of the administration. And it capitalized on that beauty. Perks of anonymity. The media then parlayed that experience into a wider story across government. Protecting such anonymity became a lifeline to integrity in government, so the plot went.

Now, a man who was relatively unknown or insignificant used a cloak of anonymity to propel himself into a position of knowledge and trust, publicly. Though never knowing who he was, if he even existed – was it a he or she – left many people to question what it really said, if it was all true, about our current president and his administration?

Another irony is that he was a nobody before but only now more of a somebody. But the revealed somebody turns out to be less relevant than at least the NYT had implied.

Of course the real abject lesson for us here is to be careful what and how you trust what comes from the mainstream media organs these days. You never know where the truth starts or ends, or comes from. Yet there are times when they just reveal who they are. It did lay bare the notion that some are/were working inside the administration, covertly in their minds anyway, to either save the administration or sabotage it from being successful. However they justified it. Who says all anonymity is working for the good?

In this case, anonymity seemed to be the forbidden fruit from which all this supposed truth and honesty would flow. It turned out to be only another deception. An intermittent pause in the search for identity and perception.

Media Vultures

In the good old days, Johny Carson might make a joke in his monologue something like “the media is so bad”. To which Ed McMahon would say “how bad is it, Johnny?” Carson would nail it saying “it’s so bad that ….” But those days are gone and so are most of the jokes. Now it’s sort of pathetic that media is the standing joke. But no one is laughing.

In those days the media might have taken a cue from the national criticism. Not today. Judging by their current reaction to criticism, they cannot be shamed or even insulted. However, they feel so offended that Trump called them the enemy of the people.

As the IG report on Comey came out, media took a pass for the most part. CNN didn’t really mention it. MSNBC looked for anything else to talk about, including the Dick Cheney hunting mishap. What happened was the IG was compelled to put out an 80 page report on what Comey did.

Last week, CNN foisted the bombshell canard about an asset in the Kremlin that had to be whisked out because Trump was about to out him. Except it didn’t happen. Well that storyline got dropped real quick. What asset, what story?

That story was probably meant to detract from the not so convenient news about the left’s coup and the investigation of it. Sure, no one needs to bother with that.

Then we have the big story about another Kavanaugh accusation. The witness does not remember the incident. NYT was forced to back peddle and said they inadvertently left that part of it out of the story. They had to delete tweets and edit it. The author of the column threw NYT under the buss for having the policy of not naming witnesses.

So naturally that part got left out because of their policy. Say what? You mean NYT cannot mention a witness doesn’t remember anything without naming her?

While over at CNN, they discussed the non-story. Paul Begala let it be known that Democrats will never stop on the Kavanaugh issue. He said they are going to keep it alive forever. It will never ever die. So truth or reality means nothing to those folks.

NYT committed another intentional error when it said in Tweeting a piece on 9-11 that 18 years ago planes took aim at the Twin Towers in NY. They went further than ILhan Omar saying said that the planes did it. Omar at least grumbled that some people did something — without saying who or what. See how the left works? Then NYT had to delete and edit that storyline, too. But it did fit with media ignoring the 9-11 commemoration.

This is not news. The lamestream media are in the narrative business. It isn’t news at all.

Some people did do something, all right. Well, it was not rogue keyboards conspiring.

Kavanaugh and the NYT editorial board

A little comparison experiment: a new commercial calls Kavanaugh a “grand slam for conservatives.” Imagine if Democrats tried doing an honest ad for their nominee. It would be like “he will stretch that Constitution into play-doh. An experienced activist. He’ll assist in rewriting the Constitution. The perfect candidate for Marxists.” No, that doesn’t work the same way. So Dems have to lie: that’s why they can’t be honest. If they told the truth people would be repulsed. Can you picture an honest ad for their agenda?

For a couple years, NYT’s editorial page has tryied to call Trump everything from racist to crazy and unfit. So now their editorial board hires a crazy racist, Sarah Jeong, as a card carrying board member. But they dig in to defend their decision. It is a good fit. No, it was not a slip or something they did not know. It is the reason they hired her.

That is how the Democrats operate. If it were not for deception, they wouldn’t be able to sell anything. So the lie is everything; it’s the bomb.

Just throw in a few more: Obama’s record on the economy. It was abysmal. But now if the Obama economy was that good as they claim, then how come Obama has been out of office for a year and half and the Democrats are still trying to sell Obama’s economic failures? Why is that? But the people would know if it was good, and Democrats wouldn’t have to sell it. It sucked and people knew it did. So now the people have become the problem because they know it. But do you think Obama actually really cared about the economy?

And then Senate intelligence darling, Diane Feinstein has a commie spy chauffeur for 20 years. And Donald Trump’s election was the problem?

While we are at it, Pastor Darrell Scott was called every name and racial slur you can think of. His crime? He went to the White House with other clergy to work on problems affecting justice and the black community, to help people. For that he was attacked. But he was not attacked by nasty Trump supporters, the president, or conservatives and Republicans. He was attacked by blacks and Democrats as an Uncle Tom and traitor to blacks.

This at the same time blacks in Chicago are calling on Rahm Emanuel to resign. Fed up is an understatement. But Democrats and blacks lash out at Scott. It makes no sense, except to the Marxist, increasingly socialist, Left and their plantation police.

Obama, Treasonous Traitor

July 16, 2018 — Daniel Greenfield | Frontpage Mag

In the media’s frantic downhill race to out-rage each other over Trump, there’s no bottom. Charles M. Blow, the Cory Booker of media columnists, desperately tried to justify his job with this ridiculous column aimed right at the nerve center of the resistance’s id.

Its subtle title is, “Trump, Treasonous Traitor”.

That’s like a parody of a column like this. In it, Blow declares, “Whether or not Trump himself or anyone in his orbit personally colluded or conspired with the Russians about their interference is something Mueller will no doubt disclose at some point, but there remains one incontrovertible truth: In 2016, Russia, a hostile foreign adversary, attacked the United States of America.”

“Trump should be directing all resources at his disposal to punish Russia for the attacks and prevent future ones. But he is not. America’s commander wants to be chummy with the enemy who committed the crime. Trump is more concerned with protecting his presidency and validating his election than he is in protecting this country.

“This is an incredible, unprecedented moment. America is being betrayed by its own president. America is under attack and its president absolutely refuses to defend it.

“Simply put, Trump is a traitor and may well be treasonous.”

Remember when the New York Times wasn’t a complete joke? Still is this what the left wants as the new metric?

It’s incontrovertible that Islamic terrorists attacked America, but Obama insisted on being chummy with Iran, the Taliban and the Muslim Brotherhood: all of whom had plenty of American blood on their hands.

“This is an incredible, unprecedented moment. America is being betrayed by its own president. America is under attack and its president absolutely refuses to defend it.

“Simply put, Obama is a traitor and may well be treasonous.”

If only they would have opened their eyes: Obama, Holder, Lynch. Clapper, Brennan, Hayden, Rice, Rhodes, Kerry, Hillary, what a cabal. A caldron of incestuous treason.

NYT hires a new script writer

A brand new rosy-eyed columnist came on the NYT staff in September. She did an introduction interview with the paper’s radical staff and appears to be a perfect fit for them. Bowe Begdahl was not available.

Speaking about the future prospects of a Trump presidency, she wasted no time:

“Michelle Goldberg: Thank you so much! I couldn’t be more thrilled. I feel like Cinderella — which is not to compare the fantastic people at Slate, where I worked until now, to a wicked stepfamily. My first column is on Tuesday.”

Michelle: “Yeah, I think we’re learning that the Constitution may, in fact, be a suicide pact. It’s a source of constant astonishment to me that the country has handed over the means to destroy civilization on this planet to an unhinged lunatic who lost the popular vote and was installed with the aid of a hostile foreign power. It’s such an epic institutional failure that it calls everything we thought we knew about this country’s stability into question.”

That’s how you ace a job introduction. Leave it all on the editor’s desk.
Hit all the high points.

Knock out game, figment of imagination and “urban myth”

It’s now referred to as an urban myth. One journalist called the reaction to the Knockout Game “white panic”.

As it has been reported on Nox and Friends here.

The second is what caught me. I mean imagine someone calling the Trayvon Martin hysteria “black panic”. That would never go down. (and that was one incident) Actually, that label might have been called ‘white institutional denial’ — and ignorance, not to mention a racist response. Maybe Trayvon had a custom play at home-version?

Now we have the New York Times creatively trying to gloss it over as “urban myth”.
Finally an article capturing the disturbing perspective – er coverage.

Vicious ‘knockout game’ attacks dismissed as urban myth by New York Times? You decide

By John Luciew | PennLive | November 25, 2013

Over the weekend, the New York Times, that liberal lion of print journalism, broke its relative silence on the troubling trend of knockout game attacks on the rise in many cities, including parts of New York. In the attacks, young criminals choose an unsuspecting victim, seemingly at random, then haul off and hit them in the head or face. Often, the target is knocked out cold and goes down in a heap, hitting the sidewalk hard. Some never wake up. So far, at least seven deaths are attributed to what the young perpetrators see as sport. Hence the reprehensible term, knockout game.

While other media outlets, notably Fox News, have been covering the vicious knockout game attacks as an all-too-real outrage, the New York Times took a different tact in its Saturday editions. It raised the issue as more of a question, than fact, with the headline: “Police Unsure if Random Attacks Are Rising Threat or Urban Myth”

Urban myth?
[NYT said:]

“Police officials in several cities where such attacks have been reported said that the “game” amounted to little more than an urban myth, and that the attacks in question might be nothing more than the sort of random assaults that have always occurred. And in New York City, police officials are struggling to determine whether they should advise the public to take precautions against the Knockout Game — or whether in fact it existed.”

More PennLive

Here it is, we’ve seen video after video of the same thing. Even one news outlet originally covered the story interviewing people that happened to be black, who explain the game not deny it. It seems they didn’t get the talking points on the issue yet. But deny it?–Hardly.

But how can you deny it while seeing repeated instances happening in different cities? You can’t. Well, at least not until the NYT comes out to ask: “who are you going to believe, us or your lying eyes?”

And here is how the Left reports on it:
“The Knockout Game is a dream come true for Racist White Consrvatives”— Daily Kos

It is a new moral panic that combines white anxieties about black criminality, fear of black young people, and stereotypes about “African-American violence” which have been cultivated by white supremacists since Reconstruction.
There is no assumption made by the White Right that the majority of black people disapprove of the criminals among us. Moreover, the White Right is incapable of such an inference because the White Gaze sees black and brown people as an undifferentiated mass and a hive mind, one step removed from savage beasts.

And so it goes. Sharpton finally did, if begrudgingly, address it.

How about an encore?

Media Feeding Panic Over The So-Called ‘Knockout Game’ That Might Not Even Exist” — Think Progress

Guess What? The ‘Knockout Game’ Is America’s Latest Phony Panic” — Daily Beast

One more for the road…

knockout game trend_it’s not real but random street assaults are” — Slate

Well, when the Left addresses it….they address it! So ee have NYT, Daily Kos, Think Prog, Daily Beast, and Slate… notice a little bit of a pattern? The only game they’re really interested in, deadly or not, is politics.

Thoughts: Silent Screams

It is the dominance of moral relativism in liberal institutions like the New York Times that make even the most apologetic expose of the Muslim Brotherhood a major event. – Caroline Glick

Just Gene
Article from The Jerusalem Post
Column One
by Caroline S. Glick
Two events happened on Wednesday which should send a shiver down the spine of everyone concerned about the future of the American Jewish community.  But to understand their importance it is important to consider the context in which they occurred.
US Secretary of State John Kerry (L) shakes hands with Egypt's President Mohamed Morsi in Cairo
On January 13, the New York Times reported on a series of virulently anti-Jewish comments Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi made in speeches given in 2010.  Among other things, Morsi said, “We must never forget, brothers, to nurse our children and our grandchildren on hatred for them, for Zionists, for Jews.”  He said that Egyptian children “must feed on hatred, hatred must continue.  The hatred must go on for God and as a form of worshiping him.”
In another speech, he called Jews “bloodsuckers” and “the descendants of apes and pigs.”
Two weeks after the Times ran the story, the Obama administration sent four F-16 fighter jets to Egypt as part of a military aid package announced in December 2012 entailing the provision of 20 F-16 s and 200 M1-A1 Abrams tanks.
The Anti-Defamation League, AIPAC, the Jewish Council for Public Affairs and other prominent American Jewish groups did not oppose the weapons transfer.
With the American Jewish leadership silent on the issue, Israel found its national security, championed by Sen. Rand Paul.  He attached an amendment to a budget bill that would bar the US from transferring the advanced weapons platforms to Egypt.
Paul explained, “Egypt is currently governed by a religious zealot…who said recently that Jews were bloodsuckers and descendants of apes and pigs.  This doesn’t sound like the kind of stable personality we [sh]ould be sending our most sophisticated weapons to.”
Paul’s amendment was overwhelmingly defeated, due in large part to the silence of the American Jewish leadership.
The Times noted that Morsi’s castigation of Jews as “apes and pigs” was “a slur for Jews that is familiar across the Muslim world”.
Significantly the Times failed to note that the reason it is familiar is because it comes from both the Koran and the hadith.  The scripturally based denigration of Jews as apes and pigs is legion among leading clerics of both Sunni and Shi’ite Islam.
It was not a coincidence that the Times failed to mention why Morsi’s castigation of Jews as apes and pigs was so familiar to Muslim audiences.  The Islamic sources of Muslim Brotherhood Jew hatred, and indeed, hatred of Jews by Islamic leaders from both the Sunni and Shi’ite worlds is largely overlooked by the liberal ideological camp.   And the overwhelming majority of the American Jewish leadership is associated with the liberal ideological camp.
If the Times acknowledged that the Jew hatred espoused by Morsi and his colleagues in the Muslim Brotherhood, as well as by their Shi’ite colleagues in the Iranian regime and Hezbollah is based on the Koran, they would have to acknowledge that Islamic Jew hatred and other bigotry is not necessarily antithetical to mainstream Islamic teaching.  And that is something that the Times, like its fellow liberal institutions, is not capable of acknowledging.
They are incapable of acknowledging this possibility because considering it would implicitly require a critical study of jihadist doctrine.  And a critical study of jihadist doctrine would show that the doctrine of jihad, or Islamic holy war subscribed to by the Muslim Brotherhood and its affiliates, as well as by the Iranian regime and Hezbollah and their affiliates, is widely supported, violent, bigoted, evil and dangerous to the free world. (Just Gene’s italics)
And that isn’t even the biggest problem with studying the doctrine of jihad.  The biggest problem is that a critical study of the doctrine of jihad would force liberal institutions like the New York Times and the institutional leadership of the American Jewish community alike to abandon the reigning dogma of the liberal ideological camp – moral relativism.
Moral relativism is based on a refusal to call evil evil and a concomitant willingness to denigrate truth if truth requires you to notice evil.  Since pointing out the reality of the danger the jihadist doctrines propagated by the likes of the Muslim Brotherhood involves the implicit demand that people make distinctions between good and evil and side with good against evil, moral relativists – that is most liberals – cannot contend with jihad.
This is why the American Jewish leadership refused to join Rand Paul and his conservative Republican colleagues in the Senate and demand an immediate cessation of US military aid to the Muslim Brotherhood-controlled Egyptian military even after the evidence of the Brotherhood’s genocidal Jew hatred was splashed across the front page of the Times.
It is the dominance of moral relativism in liberal institutions like the New York Times that make even the most apologetic expose of the Muslim Brotherhood a major event.  And it is the dominance of liberal orthodoxies in the mainstream Jewish community that makes it all but impossible for Jewish leaders to speak up against the Muslim Brotherhood, despite the manifest danger its genocidal hatred of Jews poses not only for Israel, but for Jews everywhere.
It is bad enough that liberal Jewish leaders won’t speak out against the Koranic-inspired evil that characterizes the ideology of the Muslim Brotherhood.  What is worse is what their own morally relative blindness causes them to do.  On Wednesday, we saw two distressing examples of the consequences of this self-imposed embrace of ideological fantasies.
First, on Wednesday, Yeshiva University’s Cardozo Law School’s Journal of Conflict Resolution gave its annual International Advocate of Peace Award to former president Jimmy Carter.  Carter’s long record of anti-Israel, and indeed anti-Semitic, actions and behavior made the decision to bestow him with the honor an affront not only to the cause of peace, but to the cause of Jewish legal rights.  As an advocate of Hamas and a man who castigates Israel as an illegal “apartheid” state, Carter has a long record of outspoken opposition to both Jewish human rights and to viable peace between Israel and its neighbors.  (Just Gene recommends you read Carter’s own book)
For outsiders, the Orthodox Jewish university’s law school’s law journal’s decision to honor Carter was shocking, but as it works out, the Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution confers its prize almost exclusively on people active in pressuring Israel to make concessions to Palestinian terrorists who reject Israel’s right to exist.  Past winners include Dennis Ross, Bill Clinton, Richard Holbrooke, George Mitchell, John Wallach and Seeds of Peace and, perhaps most astoundingly, the outspoken Jew hater Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
In other words, Carter wasn’t chosen for the honor despite his anti-Israel record.  He was selected because of his anti-Israel record.
In a similar fashion, New York’s 92nd Street Y invited virulent Israel hater Roger Waters to perform a concert on April 30.  Given Water’s outspoken opposition to Israel, his call for total economic and cultural warfare against the Jewish state and his leading role in the BDS movement, it is not possible that the 92nd Street Y was not unaware of his radical, anti-Semitic sentiments.  And so, the only reasonable explanation for his invitation to perform at the Jewish institution is that the Y wanted to invite this openly anti-Semite musician to perform.  A public outcry by pro-Israeli activists forced the Y to cancel his performance.
The day that Carter was embraced by the Orthodox Jewish establishment, Jewish author and activist Pamela Geller was silenced.  Geller is the nightmare of the liberal Jewish establishment.  She is a beautiful and articulate speaker and writer who has risen to prominence in the US for her steadfast commitment to exposing the deadly pathologies of Jew hatred, misogyny and other prejudices inherent to jihadist ideology.  Geller’s website, Atlas Shrugs, is a clearing house for information on Islamic persecution of women, Christians and apostates and hatred of Jews.  She also showcases the documented ties between mainstream American Islamic groups and the Muslim Brotherhood.
An indefatigable defender of Israel, Geller recently ran a highly controversial, and successful ad campaign in the New York and San Francisco public transportation systems in response to an anti-Israel campaign.  Her billboards read, “In any war between civilized man and the savage, support the civilized man.  Support Israel.  Defeat Jihad.”
Geller was scheduled to speak on April 13 at the Great Neck Synagogue in Great Neck, New York.  The topic of her talk was “The Imposition of Shari’a in America.”
Last month, after learning of her talk, a consortium of Islamic and leftist activists in Nassau County led by Habeed Ahmen from the Islamic Center of Long Island launched a pressure campaign to coerce the synagogue into cancelling her speech.  Members of the group telephoned the synagogue and castigated Geller as a bigot, and likened her to the Nazis in the 1930s.
In short order liberal rabbis Michael White and Jerome Davidson took over the opposition to Geller and launched a media campaign attacking her as a bigot and demanding that the Great Neck Synagogue cancel her speech.  Rejecting the distinction Geller makes between jihadists and their victims – Muslim and non-Muslim alike, White and Davidson claimed that she opposes all Muslims and so her speech must be canceled.  By hosting her, they intoned, the Great Neck Synagogue would be guilty of propagating hate speech.  Liberal Christian and Jewish activists and their Muslim associates threatened to protest the speech.
On Wednesday the synagogue caved in to their massive pressure.  Citing “security concerns” the synagogue board released a statement saying that while “these important issues must be discussed, the synagogue is unable to bear the burden” of the pressure campaign surrounding Geller’s planned speech  Her event was canceled.
Surveys of the American Jewish community taken in recent years by the American Jewish Committee demonstrates that the vast majority of American Jews are deeply supportive of Israel, and their views tend toward the Right side of the political spectrum in issues related to Israel, the Palestinians and the wider Islamic conflict with the Jewish state.
On the other hand , the AJC’s surveys show that for the vast majority of American Jews, Israel is not a voting issue.  This state of affairs was reflected by a comment that Yeshiva University student Ben Winter made to the media regarding the absence of student protest against Carter on Wednesday.  In Winter’s words, “While many students at YU feel strongly about their Zionism, few have the courage to publicly express their opinions.”

The danger exposed by the cancellation of Geller’s speech and the conferral of honors on the likes of Carter and Waters by mainstream Jewish institutions is daunting.  If moral relativism remains the dominant dogma of the American Jewish establishment, the already weakly defended, but still strongly rooted, support for Israel among the rank and file of the American Jewish community will dissipate.

Thank you, Caroline – but
“Evil exists because good men do nothing”.
Wrong – those who do nothing are evil!!!
It is not only the Jews who do not speak out: where are the Christians, whose churches are being burned and their members slaughtered – where are the so called good Muslims, who say this is not true Islam – where are the women, who watch their sisters being tortured and raped – where are the politicians and diplomats of the world, too interested in filling their own pockets….

Where are all the world’s charities – too busy patting themselves on the back, while they spew out rhetoric, semantics and bullshit? HELL, where are the IAA (Idiots Association of Atheists) who believe they can eliminate religion by removing Nativity scenes from public property, but don’t have the cojones to say anything against Allahu Akbar?

When the Nazis came for the Jews, I heard them scream, but I’m not Jewish – I’m safe
When the Nazis came for the Catholics, I heard them scream, but I’m not Catholic – I’m safe
When the Nazis came for the Handicapped, I heard them scream, but I’m not Handicapped – I’m safe
When the Nazis came for the retarded, I heard them scream, but I’m not retarded – I’m safe
When the Nazis came for the professors, I heard them scream, but I’m not a professor – I’m safe
When the Nazis came for the bankers, I heard them scream, but I’m not a banker – I’m safe
When the Nazis came for the politicians, I heard them scream, but I’m not a politician – I’m safe
When the Nazis came for me, I screamed, there was no one left to hear me
If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?
When they come for you and you scream, and you will scream, will it make a sound?

Mysterious gold exodus

An Afghan Mystery: Why Are Large Shipments of Gold Leaving the Country?

(Zalmai for The New York Times)

A Kabul jewelry shop. Officials are concerned about gold being flown out of Afghanistan.

Published NYT: December 15, 2012

KABUL, Afghanistan — Packed into hand luggage and tucked into jacket pockets, roughly hewed bars of gold are being flown out of Kabul with increasing regularity, confounding Afghan and American officials who fear money launderers have found a new way to spirit funds from the country.

Most of the gold is being carried on commercial flights destined for Dubai, according to airport security reports and officials. The amounts carried by single couriers are often heavy enough that passengers flying from Kabul to the Persian Gulf emirate would be well advised to heed warnings about the danger of bags falling from overhead compartments. One courier, for instance, carried nearly 60 pounds of gold bars, each about the size of an iPhone, aboard an early morning flight in mid-October, according to an airport security report. The load was worth more than $1.5 million.

The gold is fully declared and legal to fly. Some, if not most, is legitimately being sent by gold dealers seeking to have old and damaged jewelry refashioned into new pieces by skilled craftsmen in the Persian Gulf, said Afghan officials and gold dealers

But gold dealers in Kabul and current and former Kabul airport officials say there has been a surge in shipments since early summer. The talk of a growing exodus of gold from Afghanistan has been spreading among the business community here, and in recent weeks has caught the attention of Afghan and American officials. The officials are now puzzling over the origin of the gold — very little is mined in Afghanistan, although larger mines are planned — and why so much appears to be heading for Dubai. […/]
