Lois Lerner, IRS and the Hatch Act

Hatch Act and Political Activities

The Hatch Act limits certain political activities of Federal employees both on and off duty. (Members of the Senior Executive Service, are subject to further restrictions and should contact the General Counsel’s office for additional guidance.) Violations of the Hatch Act may result in disciplinary action, up to and including removal. The term “political activity” means doing something in active support of or opposition to a political party, a candidate for partisan political office (e.g., President, senator, representative, state or local legislature or office), or a partisan political group (e.g., “Historians for Smith”). Examples of political activity that would violate the Hatch Act if done while on duty or using Government property include: circulating a candidate’s nominating petition within your office; using the PC in your office after work to produce a brochure in support of a candidate’s campaign; sending e-mail invitations to campaign events to friends within the agency; and using National Archives’ Internet connections to forward e-mail messages received from a partisan campaign or someone supporting a partisan candidate. Permissible political activity under the Hatch Act would include voting for the candidates of your choice; expressing opinions about candidates and issues; assisting in voter registration drives.

For a more comprehensive view of what the Hatch Act allows and disallows, please review the list of Hatch Act Do’s and Don’ts shown below. Questions concerning the Hatch Act may be directed to Christopher Runkel, Office of General Counsel.

Here is a list of don’ts :

· Engage in political activity while on duty
· Engage in political activity while wearing an official Government uniform or identifying National Archives insignia
· Engage in political activity while using a Government vehicle
· Engage in political activity in any Government office
· Engage in political activity while using Government property, including computers, printers, copiers, fax machines, and telephones
· Wear political buttons while on duty
· Display items (e.g., posters, signs, stickers) at work that indicate support of or opposition to a political party or a candidate in a partisan election
· Run as a candidate for public office in any partisan election, except in jurisdictions specified by OPM
· Solicit, accept, or receive political contributions (except in limited circumstances involving certain Federal labor or employee organizations)
· Solicit, accept, or receive political contributions from a subordinate employee
· Allow your official title to be used in connection with fund raising activities
· Host a fund raiser at your home
· Use your official authority or influence to interfere with an election
· Knowingly solicit or discourage the political activity of any person who has business before the National Archives

I haven’t heard anyone mention it. From the beginning, conservative groups were targeted — now we know systematically.

GOP says IRS’ Lois Lerner targeted Crossroads

By RACHAEL BADE | 4/9/14 | Politico

House Republicans on Wednesday accused former IRS official Lois Lerner of breaking agency rules by aggressively urging denial of tax-exempt status to Crossroads GPS, the giant political nonprofit founded by Karl Rove.

The House Ways and Means Committee released emails showing the former chief of the tax-exempt unit took a special interest in Crossroads GPS in early 2013 — inquiring with IRS officials why they hadn’t been audited. Around the same time an email suggested she might be applying for a job with a pro-President Barack Obama group, Organizing For Action, though it is unclear if she was joking.

Democrats decried the release, calling it an election year gimmick to win over the party’s political base. One campaign finance group came to the defense of Lerner, who has denied any wrongdoing, calling the probe a partisan witch hunt.

The Republican committee letter calls her actions an “aggressive and improper pursuit of Crossroads… but no evidence [that] she directed review of similarly situated left-leaning groups.”

The documents were released after a rare, closed-door Ways and Means markup, where the panel voted 23-14 along party lines to send a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder, requesting he take the former head of the IRS tax-exempt division to court — though the department already has an ongoing investigation….

Organizing for [Obama] Action

With all the calls Democrats make to rein in Tea Parties’ activism, they ignore OFA.
Schumer is mum on that.

Rep. Schock Highlights Organizing for Action, a 501(c)4 Openly Working for Obama
June 2013

Having established that no significant campaign cash was flowing through these groups, Rep. Schock then pulled up the description of Organizing for Action, a 501(c)4 whose stated mission is to “support President Obama in achieving enactment of the national agenda Americans voted for on Election Day 2012.” OFA describes this agenda as including legislation on “gun violence prevention, sensible environmental policies to address climate change and immigration reform.” Despite the obvious political overtones, OFA’s work is considered within the proper realm of a 501(c)4 activity, i.e. promoting social welfare. /…

Democrats in the hearing argued that scrutiny is appropriate for any group engaged in political activity and applying for 501(c)4 status. They further suggested the conservative groups filed for 501(c)(4) status in order to hide their donor lists, implying these organizations were hiding large influxes of cash. In ‘response, Rep. Schock asked three Tea Party groups giving testimony to state their annual budgets.

Have a little politics with your hypocrisy. “Political overtones” is a giant understatement.

The OFA staffers run president Obama’s twitter account, and sign tweets BO for Obama. Yet you can bet their tax-exempt status was never in question – nor will it be.

Here’s the script on the twitter account for Barack Obama

What is OFA?

“Organizing for Action is the grassroots movement built by millions of Americans to pass the agenda we voted for in 2012.”

It’s Obama’s personal campaign. No, no politics or political advocacy going on there.

Is IRS checking that Twitter feed and monitoring every tweet? They are probably too busy trying to get all the names, donors, copies of speeches, writing and reading material of Tea Party groups, and thinking up questions to ask them for pending 501 status. That’s what Schumer wants them to redouble their efforts on.

And try to name one part of government he hasn’t politicized as well.
Time to rename IRS, now Obama’s ‘Internal Revenge Service’.

Here’s what Obamashirts think

Here comes Obama’s Organizing for Action brownshirts to the rescue.
Protesting the protestors: Gangsta Gov calls in the thugs.

Obama’s middle name is ruin

Never mind that Hussein is Obama’s middle name, his default name is RUIN.

If you take Obama’s campaign example, which is now his lobbying, BrownShirt Society, it uses the same message his campaign used all along.

We know his emphasis was on media and social networking, coupled with fundraising. They projected it as grassroots organizing but that is another deceiving footnote to Obama.

On the website, the central theme starts with a simple question, “Are you In?
When you translate that to chat lingo, you come up with (R-U-IN) RUIN.

It’s pretty funny that his big presence on the web, still his ‘campaign” organization, makes such a revealing statement about his plans.

Just ask Obama supporters if they support Obama and RUIN?

clip_ob site image
Are you in? Well, are you in RUIN yet? No? Give it time. You will be.

Organizing for Action quotes Obama about Climate Change:

If Congress won’t act soon to protect future generations, I will.

Planned Parenthood and Abortion anyone? Future posterity?

Make a donation today to support this grassroots movement. — [what a laugh]
Whether it’s the NRA trying to stop progress on gun safety legislation that 90% of Americans support, or conservatives in a state legislature trying to ram through radical rollbacks of women’s rights, they are banking on you not paying attention.
They’re hoping you won’t jump in to the fight.
This week should have made it clearer than ever why you need to. / (donate button)

More like Obama just hopes you won’t join the fight against him.

And OFA very much needs you to donate to RUIN. Won’t you support ruin?

On so-called “immigration reform” they suggest:

Supporters across the country were out in force this week, urging their representatives to move immigration reform forward. In anticipation of yesterday’s House Republican Caucus meeting with Speaker John Boehner, they were out in their communities making their voices heard. /…
This fight isn’t over yet. Following the House Republicans’ meeting, OFA volunteers are determined to keep up the pressure and make reform a reality. Until there is a comprehensive immigration reform bill headed to President Obama’s desk, our work continues. Say you’ll join the fight.
/… The fight for immigration reform is on its way through the House, and OFA volunteers are at the forefront of efforts to get it passed.

Oh goody, another “fight” — as everything always is to Liberals.
Here they come, conjuring up the sentiments of the Battle hymn of the Republic :

“He is trampling out the vintage
where the grapes of wrath are stored,
He hath loosed his fateful lightning
of His terrible swift sword,” (sorry, it’s Obama’s choreography)

So I have to ask ….RUIN? Yes, more ruin he proposes: more big government, top-down tyranny everyone can get behind, or under, right? It makes me sick.

OFA events received plenty of attention from local media:[blah, blah, blah] /…
It’s not too late to throw your support behind immigration reform and keep this momentum going into the House. Add your name today.

So people, will you show them it’s not too late for RUIN?

Fight, Fight, Fight…for ruin! “Are you in?”

And if he is going to use executive orders to force his agenda, what does he need them for?
Oh, the BrownShirts are coming. (that’s what he needs them for)
Won’t you be a brownshirt for Obama?

... his RUIN is marching on!

Politico

President Barack Obama’s got a volunteer army — and all their marching orders come from carefully organized paid generals back at headquarters.

Obama won two terms by harnessing a grassroots movement through a tightly controlled, top-down campaign organization. Now the group formed out of Organizing for America is now bringing that approach to Organizing for Action.

This really is Obama ruin. Are you in?

Return of the money changers

While most of America wants to see the money changers out of the Capitol temple, this president ups the ante to bring in more of them. Then, no doubt, he will complain about the money and influence in politics.

Obama thinks what we need is more money and special interest influence. His rebooted campaign raises so many questions on so many levels.

NYT: Obama’s Backers Seek Big Donors to Press Agenda

President Obama’s political team is fanning out across the country in pursuit of an ambitious goal: raising $50 million to convert his re-election campaign into a powerhouse national advocacy network, a sum that would rank the new group as one of Washington’s biggest lobbying operations.

But the rebooted campaign, known as Organizing for Action, has plunged the president and his aides into a campaign finance limbo with few clear rules, ample potential for influence-peddling, and no real precedent in national politics.

In private meetings and phone calls, Mr. Obama’s aides have made clear that the new organization will rely heavily on a small number of deep-pocketed donors, not unlike the “super PACs” whose influence on political campaigns Mr. Obama once deplored.

At least half of the group’s budget will come from a select group of donors who will each contribute or raise $500,000 or more, according to donors and strategists involved in the effort.

Unlike a presidential campaign, Organizing for Action has been set up as a tax-exempt “social welfare group.” That means it is not bound by federal contribution limits, laws that bar White House officials from soliciting contributions, or the stringent reporting requirements for campaigns. In their place, the new group will self-regulate.

Officials said it would voluntarily disclose the names of large donors every few months and would not ask administration personnel to solicit money, though Obama aides will probably appear at some events.

“No precedent”? – That is until Obama created one, another historic first for the Radical in Chief. He sure is working at leaving a lasting legacy/stain on our nation.

The Left’s Soros-funded influence is not enough. They need more big money and big donors. Sure it will be the largest lobby and influence in Washington, what would you expect from a usurping dictator?

And for giving the big money, get big meetings with the president. Misinformation Secretary, Jay Carney claims this is not selling influence. How is it not? Officials appearing at events are not soliciting money either. (pardon my Casablanca chuckle)

Yet another conflict the media can pretend does not exist. The Obama Alinskyites can trot out their “the American people don’t care about any of this” excuse
